So I've been rereading Anne McCaffery's Pern books. Understanding SOOO much more than I did when I read them as a kid- wow. Few more things I object to now then I did as a kid, some because I just didn't understand them.
What I'm finding though, is that I'm enjoying them a whole lot more. Though I still love lots of action and adventure- I can appreciate some of the slower paced books. And now having read all of her Pern books (sans some of the short stories and The Girl Who Heard Dragons), the story makes SO MUCH MORE SENSE as a whole. I can see how she has pieced all the parts together.
The last book I'm reading is The Skies Of Pern, which was one of her last books. She cowrote it with her son- Todd. When I was a kid I hated it, and I can understand why. As an adult though I'm wondering if maybe I judged Todd's writing style too soon. Yes, it is MUCH more masculine which does bug me. However, the storyline is better then I thought.
So here's the question- should I give him another chance? Should I go check out the 4-5 books of Pern that he wrote just before/after Anne's death?
Not sure...
Mostly this is spurred because since I've been on a tear reading, I have been dreaming in that world. And THAT makes me want to write aweful fan fiction. Aweful fan-fiction = bad, bad, bad.
