Notes from Saturday Morning October 2, 2010 General Conference:
1. President Thomas S. Monson - President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
5 new temples announced. Importance of Missionary work.
2. President Holland - 12
What debts of gratitude do I owe that I have not yet paid in full? How can I pay my debts in full?
3. Rosemary M. Wixom - Primary General President
4.
The prophet of today is more vital than any set of scriptures ever written.
5. ??? - ??? - ???
Less important is what is taught, and more by what spirit the class is taught.
A teachers attitude is not taught, it was caught.
1. Devote ourselves to the scriptures. Before we can teach the gospel, we must know the gospel. Besides our lesson preparation we need to be reading regularly and come to love the scriptures. Feast upon the scriptures. Seek not to teach till you know yourself. "I did not venture to ask more questions, I thought it best to read the handbook." It is contrary to the way of heaven to repeat individually what he has already revealed collectively.
2. Apply in your life that which you have learned. As teachers our work is to keep the commandments with all of our
3. Seek the kingdom of heaven (?) - Without the spirit real learning cannot happen. As teachers we should not focus on performance, but how we help others learn and live. When did I last pray for the students in my class? Age, learning or training are not required to commune with the Lord - scriptures, commandments and prayer will bring about revelation
4. Exercise our agency to act upon the spiritual promptings we receive. When that spirit speaks wise men and women obey. The sweetest moments are when we submit to the Lord.
6. D Todd Christopherson - 12
Time and Agency are the two gifts given by life. Ours is the freedom to choose how we spend these gifts. Our time on Earth is a stewardship of Time and Agency.
Elements of a consecrated life:
1. Purity- Though we are not perfect, through repentance we can have hold upon the Grace the Lord has given unto us.
2. work- All honest work is the work of God. Just as honest work gives rest sweetness, righteous worthwhile recreation further bolsters work. Wholesome entertainment is hard to find. Sometimes, it takes hard work to find wholesome recreation.
3. respect for ones body- Exaltation only possible with the bending of physical and spiritual bodies. Life is long enough for each spirit no matter the body, and each body qualifies for resurrection. "Know ye not that your body is a temple?" - Our bodies are not ours, but have been bought and paid for by Jesus Christ.
4. service- Those who go about doing good serve as a model of consecration.
5. integrity- Integrity is not naivety. What is is thinking that we will not be judged of our works.
7. President Dieter F. Uchdorf - 12
Slow down a little. Focus on the essentials when encountering adverse conditions. Sometimes we think that the more we rush, the faster we'll get through it. Because they unnecessary complicate their lives, they diminish the joy that live can brings. Any virtue when taken to extreme can become a vice (over work! -- Don't do it!.) There is more to life then increasing our speed. We have to forgo some good things to find that which is better or best. Beauty and clarity in simplicity. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. The message of the Lord is simple, "Come, follow me." Easy for the basic gospel message to get lost in the divulge of information of today. Focus on the significant. It is not requisite that we run faster than we are able to.
Key relationships
1. Us with God - As we open our lives to the Holy Ghost, we find more fulfillment.
2. Us with Families - No other success can compensate for failure in the home. (this is shown by achievement in schools.) Love is spelled TIME.
3. Us to our Fellow Men - Listen to one another. Build relationships
4. Us with Ourselves - Reduce the rush and take time to get to know yourself. Find out what the gospel means for ourselves. Learn to see yourself as the Lord sees you.
Perhaps, now is the time to refocus on what is most important. Place attention on the basics of the restored gospel.
